Microsoft Publisher Won't Open Anymore? What Happened and What to Do

A Publisher file that no longer opens, next to the options for opening it again

Quick answer

Publisher stopped opening or disappeared from Microsoft 365? Here's why it happened on October 1, 2026, which copies still work, and how to open your .pub files now.

Download free

If Microsoft Publisher won't open, has vanished from your Microsoft 365 apps, or won't install on a new computer, that's not a fault. Microsoft retired Publisher from Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026. Your .pub files are still on your computer; you just need another program to open them, such as Korva, which opens and edits them on Mac, Windows and Linux.

What happened

Microsoft announced well ahead of time that Publisher would reach its end of life in October 2026, and on October 1, 2026 it was removed from Microsoft 365. Since then, Microsoft 365 subscribers can’t install, download or use Publisher, and it isn’t included in Office 2024. One-time-purchase copies lost support on October 13, 2026, when Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support. The full timeline, with Microsoft’s own wording, is in our Publisher end-of-life guide.

So if Publisher worked last month and doesn’t now, or the icon is gone after an Office update, the retirement is almost certainly the reason.

Which kind of Publisher did you have?

What still works depends on how you got Publisher:

You have What happens now
Microsoft 365 (a subscription: Personal, Family, Business, or a school or work plan) Publisher is gone. You can’t install or use it, even with an active subscription.
A one-time purchase (for example Office Professional 2021, 2019 or 2016) It can still be installed and used, but it’s unsupported: no fixes and no security updates. If a Windows update or a new computer breaks it, nothing will fix it.
A Mac Publisher never existed for macOS, so you’ll always have needed another app.

Not sure which you have? In any Office app, look under File › Account. A subscription says Microsoft 365; a one-time purchase names a year, such as Office Professional Plus 2021.

Your files are fine

The retirement removed the app, not your documents. Every .pub you saved is still on your drive, USB stick, shared folder or email. Don’t delete them, and don’t try “repairing” Office to get Publisher back. What you need is something that can read the format.

How to open your .pub files now

  1. Korva (Mac, Windows, Linux). Download Korva and open the file. Files from Publisher 2003 and later open with their layout, as an editable copy, and your original is never changed. The free version exports your first complete project as often as you like, with no watermark. Korva Pro is $49 once for the rest, including converting a whole folder.
  2. The free browser converter. For one file you just need to read or print, the PUB to PDF converter turns it into a PDF inside your browser, without uploading it. The PUB viewer shows the pages without converting.
  3. LibreOffice Draw (free). It imports some Publisher files through its libmspub filter. Simple files often come through fine; complex layouts can shift. See LibreOffice Draw vs Publisher.
  4. A one-time-purchase copy of Publisher, if you still have one installed. Use it now to save PDFs of anything important (File › Export › Create PDF/XPS), while it still runs.

Word can’t open .pub files at all, so it isn’t an option for your old documents. More detail is in how to open a .pub file without Publisher.

If a .pub won’t open in Korva either

Very old files, damaged files, and files that aren’t really Publisher documents can still give trouble. The help guide for a .pub that won’t open goes through what Korva tells you and what to try next.

What to do this week

  • Find your files. Search your computer, shared drives and old USB sticks for .pub.
  • Open the one you need most in Korva or the browser converter, and check it.
  • Save PDFs of anything you must keep, so it no longer depends on any one app.
  • Pick a tool for new work. If you made bulletins, newsletters or certificates every week, see Publisher alternatives compared.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't Microsoft Publisher open anymore?

Microsoft retired Publisher from Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026. Since then, Microsoft 365 subscribers can't install, download or use it. Nothing is wrong with your computer or your files.

Are my .pub files gone?

No. The retirement removed the app, not your documents. Your .pub files are still wherever you saved them; you just need another program to open them.

My copy of Publisher still works. Why?

You probably have a one-time-purchase copy, such as Office 2021 or an earlier Professional edition. Microsoft says those can still be installed and used, but support ended on October 13, 2026, so they get no more fixes.

How can I open a .pub file now?

Use a program that reads Publisher files: Korva opens and edits them on Mac, Windows and Linux; the free Korva browser converter turns one into a PDF without uploading it; LibreOffice Draw imports some simpler files.

Can Word open a .pub file?

No. Word has no import for Publisher files. Microsoft's own route is to save the .pub as a PDF in Publisher first, which needs a working copy of Publisher.

Keep every file you've ever made.

Download Korva free and open your first .pub file in the next two minutes. No account. Nothing uploaded.
